An SSL certificate is a certificate that encrypts the connection between a browser and a site, shown as a padlock and an https address. It protects users’ data, for example from forms and payments, against interception. It also matters for marketing: the absence of https is sometimes flagged by browsers as an unsafe site, which scares off visitors, and Google treats encryption as one of the factors in assessing a site.
